We all love eating fresh fruit and vegetables but did you know that preserving the harvest is perhaps the second best way to enjoy delicious produce. Join us as we partner with the Nantucket Preservation Trust to help bring awareness to Preservation Month during the month of June.
During this class, Carole Murko will work closely with participants to ‘put up’ the first perfect batch this season with a strawberry rhubarb jam. Carole will introduce you to the necessary equipment needed and walk you through the canning essentials such as filling and sealing jars, how to use a hot water bath, and the importance of food safety during preservation. While you learn about the canning process, sample a variety of preserved goods that capture the flavors of the season and imagine the joy each jar can bring during the gray days of winter.
What to Expect: In our Jam-making class, you will get to meet Carole Murko of Heirloom Meals. A renaissance woman in her trade, she hosts a radio show called Heirloom Meals, appears monthly as a food expert and demo chef on News Channel 13, Albany, NY’s NBC affiliate, and writes for The Huffington Post, Zester Daily, Edible Berkshires and Berkshire Magazine. After all of that hard work she still manages to find time to work on her personal blog: Heirloom Meals.
- The demonstration is 2 hours and is limited to 14 participants.
